I am sorry to report that this can be described only as a Significant Waste. The Met show manifests all the color and gusto that made Eugène Delacroix the leading figure in French romanticism, while covering the signal tendencies of his art. And it goes some way toward explaining why later artists from Monet to Picasso regarded him, with envy, as a forebear.

During the holiday season, the major exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art is Delacroix, through January 6. There was little or no development or change detectable from his first works, which were revolutionary in the 1820s, to his last and worst in the ’50s. This past weekend, I checked out the Delacroix exhibitions at the Met and I must say they brought me back to the place I love: Morocco. 26/09/2018 · “Art for art’s sake”—the antithesis of noble patronage—was a buzzword in bohemian Paris of the 1820s. But this was anathema to Eugène Delacroix, who was well-born but left an impecunious orphan at age 16. He was talented, ambitious, and competitive, with great plans for his future. Painting brilliantly colored works with emotive physicality, Eugène Delacroix was a defining artist of French Romanticism.
